When looking at diamonds for engagement rings or other types of jewellery, there are few factors that you need to know as a general guideline but keep in mind that every single diamond is unique and has total different characteristics to the similar one with same size, shape, cut, colour and clarity. Here we are going to discuss the first C which is the cut of a diamond.
Cut: A cut of a diamond should not be mistaken with the shape of the diamonds. Diamonds come in a variety of shapes and the most sought after one is round brilliant. Any other shape that is not round brilliant is called fancy shapes and they range from princess, cushion, radiant, emerald, square emerald to oval, marquise, heart shapes. The only shape that has cut grade is the round brilliant cut and none of the fancy shapes has a cut grading as each fancy cut diamond can have different proportions as in length, width and depth. The fancy cuts needs to be checked and compared with similar shapes to be able to find the one with most brilliant and scintillation. The skill of a diamond cutter is in maximizing the sparkle and scintillation of a diamond when cutting a rough stone. The cut in our opinion is the most important of the 4Cs as it brings out the brightness and fire of the diamond.
