1.5 Carat Diamond

A 1.5 carat diamond sits at a captivating sweet spot in the world of fine jewellery – considerably larger than the traditional one-carat benchmark, yet still refined, elegant, and wearable for everyday life. For many clients, a 1.5 carat diamond represents the perfect balance between presence and proportion.

As jewellers, we often describe 1.5 carat diamonds as confident without being excessive – a size that makes a statement while remaining timeless.

What Does 1.5 Carat Actually Mean?

Carat refers to the weight of a diamond, not its size. One carat equals 0.20 grams, meaning a 1.5 carat diamond weighs 0.30 grams. However, how large a diamond appears depends heavily on its cut quality, proportions, and shape.

A well-cut 1.5 carat diamond can appear significantly larger than a poorly cut stone of the same weight – which is why expert selection matters.

How Big Is a 1.5 Carat Diamond?

As a general guide, a well-cut round brilliant 1.5 carat diamond typically measures around 7.3–7.5mm in diameter from the top of the stone. Fancy shapes such as oval, pear, marquise, or emerald cuts can appear even larger due to their elongated nature.

This is one of the reasons many clients gravitate toward the 1.5 carat mark – it delivers visual impact without crossing into impractical territory.

Why 1.5 Carat Has Become Increasingly Popular

Historically, diamonds over the one carat weight were considered rare and reserved for exceptional pieces. Today, advancements in sourcing and cutting have made 1.5 carat diamonds more accessible – and as a result, as diamonds of the 1carat weight became increasingly popular the 1.5 carat mark has become a popular step-up choice for modern engagement rings, for those who want a slightly larger impact.

We often see 1.5 carat diamonds chosen by clients who:

  • Want a noticeable upgrade from 1 carat
  • Want people to assume their diamond is natural
  • Prefer a refined statement rather than an outwardly bold aesthetic

In many cases, the 1.5 carat diamond has become the modern starting point for those seeking a contemporary, confident engagement ring.

Cut Quality Matters Even More at 1.5 Carat

As diamond size increases, cut quality becomes increasingly important. At 1.5 carat, any issues with proportion, symmetry, or light performance are more visible to the naked eye.

A beautifully cut 1.5 carat diamond will:

  • Return light evenly
  • Appear brighter and whiter
  • Potentially appear larger than its actual weight

This is why we at MDT DESIGN prioritise exceptional cut quality when sourcing diamonds at this size – brilliance and balance are non-negotiable.

Choosing a 1.5 Carat Diamond Engagement Ring

A 1.5 carat diamond offers incredible versatility in design. It works beautifully across a wide range of settings, from classic solitaires to more contemporary and architectural designs.

Popular pairing options include:

  • Classic solitaire settings for maximum focus on the stone
  • Bezel or low-profile designs for a modern feel
  • Three-stone or halo designs to enhance presence
  • Wider or sculptural bands to balance the diamond visually

At this size, setting style becomes rather important – proportion and engineering ensure the ring feels harmonious, wearable and showcases the diamond in the most flattering way.

Colour, Clarity & Balance at 1.5 Carat

Larger diamonds naturally show colour and inclusions more readily, which is why careful balancing of the 4Cs is essential.

In our experience:

  • Slightly lower colour grades can still appear beautifully white when well cut
  • Clarity should be chosen thoughtfully and on a case to case basis rather than solely determined by the certificate- to ensure inclusions are not visible to the naked eye
  • Fluorescence should remain minimal to avoid haziness or colour shift

This is where working with experienced jewellers makes a meaningful difference – numbers on a certificate only tell part of the story.

Is a 1.5 Carat Diamond Right for You?

A 1.5 carat diamond is ideal if you’re looking for:

  • A noticeable, elegant presence
  • A diamond that feels luxurious without excess
  • A size that photographs beautifully and wears comfortably
  • A timeless investment in craftsmanship and design

It’s a size that feels intentional, confident, and enduring.

1.5ct vs 1.5kt – Understanding the Difference

In jewellery, ct and kt are often confused because they share the same linguistic origin, yet they refer to entirely different measurements. In Australia, the abbreviation ct has traditionally been used to refer to both carat (diamond weight) and gold purity (for example, 18ct gold). Internationally, however, kt is more commonly used to denote gold karat, while ct is reserved exclusively for diamonds and gemstones.

To clarify: when discussing diamonds, 1.5ct always refers to the carat weight of the stone. When discussing gold, ct or kt refers to the purity of the metal, not weight. Although both terms originate from the word carat, their applications are completely different – one measures gemstone weight, the other measures metal/ gold composition. Understanding this distinction is essential when comparing diamonds, metals, and pricing.
